\nAbout one million people aged 65 and over live in Israel. Their share is relatively low compared with other developed countries, but is expected to grow significantly. Life expectancy in Israel is among the highest in the world.
\nMeet Batya. She enjoys life and starts her morning with strong black coffee, one sugar, well stirred. Volunteering is part of her life. She has many friends: married, widowed, divorced and single.
\nMost people aged 65 and over live at home; only about two percent live in residential institutions. Most of those at home live with a partner, while some live alone or with other relatives. Some face disability or dementia. Those who need help and qualify receive long-term care benefits. Most also receive help from their families.
\nFewer than half receive a pension, and some continue working after retirement age. Eligible people without a pension receive income support; the figure given in this film is 20 percent. Twenty-one percent of older households are below the poverty line, compared with 19 percent in the general population.
\nAround a third feel lonely, and loneliness increases with age. Overall, 86 percent of people aged 65 and over are satisfied with life. Batya is satisfied too.
